“These creatures I’ve illustrated seem to come from a place deep inside the subconscious, crammed with the innocence and happiness of my youth intertwined with the harsh realities of modern society. The whimsically iconic figures engage the viewer, by showing their love for being objectified. They are not quite human but not fully animal yet exhibit the carnal desires of both eat, sleep, breed. The grotesque images represent what we as humans try to disguise in order to maintain a sense of “normality” in the complex dance that is social interaction. Our primal urges become much more subtle as we develop as a species, unlike the creatures in my work. These anthropomorphic aberrations draw on historical modes of illustration, muted in tone to strip them of their celebratory colors in order to draw attention to the more interesting bits. They are drawn crudely on cream or cigarette ash primed paper using organic inks and watercolors relating to the subject matter’s primordial nature being born in blood and raised in mud. “
